Former Arsenal and England star Paul Merson has never been one to sugar-coat his opinions, and his latest comments on Manchester Unitedโ€™s pursuit of Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba have set the football world talking. Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson delivered an impassioned analysis of why the 20-year-old could be the game-changing signing United desperately need under new boss Ruben Amorim.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ โ€œYou can buy all the forwards in the world โ€“ and they have in Sesko, Mbeumo and Cunha โ€“ but what difference does it make if you canโ€™t get the ball? Unless youโ€™ve got a top-class midfield and you can dominate the middle of the park, you wonโ€™t win anything,โ€ Merson said, pointing directly at Unitedโ€™s long-standing weakness in the engine room.

According to Merson, Balebaโ€™s skill set is exactly what United have been missing for years. โ€œThis lad is powerful, disciplined, and comfortable on the ball. Heโ€™s the type of midfielder who doesnโ€™t just break up play โ€“ he starts attacks. Thatโ€™s priceless in the modern game,โ€ he continued.

Balebaโ€™s meteoric rise at Brighton has caught the attention of several top clubs, but Amorim has reportedly made him a top transfer priority. Brighton, as always, are driving a hard bargain, with a price tag in the region of ยฃ50m. United are believed to be exploring a player-plus-cash offer to make the deal happen.

Merson went further, warning United about the consequences of failing to secure a dominant midfielder: โ€œYou canโ€™t rely on your forwards to bail you out every game. Look at City โ€“ their midfield controls games. Arsenal too. If United donโ€™t sort out that midfield, theyโ€™ll still be chasing shadows no matter how good their strikers are.โ€

Balebaโ€™s strengths โ€“ his ability to win tackles, dictate tempo, and transition from defence to attack โ€“ make him a natural fit for Amorimโ€™s tactical approach. With the Portuguese coach favouring a compact, high-intensity style, a player like Baleba could form the backbone of a new-look midfield alongside Casemiro or Kobbie Mainoo.

The growing pressure on Unitedโ€™s recruitment team is clear: deliver Baleba, or risk starting the new era without the stability and control the side so desperately needs.

Mersonโ€™s message is loud and clear โ€“ Baleba isnโ€™t just another transfer target. Heโ€™s the key to whether Manchester United can finally return to the top.
