In a dramatic turn of events at Old Trafford, Manchester United’s hierarchy has reportedly issued an ultimatum to current manager Rúben Amorim: win the UEFA Europa League or face dismissal. The club, enduring one of its worst Premier League seasons, is already in discussions with former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane as a potential replacement.

A senior club source stated, “Let me be clear—if Amorim doesn’t win the Europa League, he’s getting sacked. I still believe in him, but this club needs results, not excuses. That’s why we already have a backup plan. We’ve spoken to a coach who has won the Champions League before, and we’ve reached a partial agreement with him to take over if needed. This isn’t personal—it’s about doing what’s best for the club. Winning the Europa League is a must, not a maybe.”

Amorim, who took over from Erik ten Hag in November 2024, has struggled to reverse United’s fortunes. The team currently sits 16th in the Premier League, having suffered a 2-0 defeat to West Ham, marking their ninth home loss of the season and dropping them to 16th place in the Premier League. With just two games remaining, Amorim’s future is uncertain, and speculation about his replacement has intensified.

Despite domestic struggles, United have qualified for the Europa League final after a 7-1 aggregate victory over Athletic Bilbao. Winning the Europa League would earn them a Champions League qualification spot for next season, which is virtually impossible for them to attain in the Premier League.

Zidane, who led Real Madrid to three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles, has been on United’s radar. However, he has previously expressed reluctance to manage in England, reportedly holding out for the France national team job after the 2026 World Cup.

Other potential candidates include Massimiliano Allegri, currently the frontrunner to become the next Manchester United manager, with odds currently at 4/1.  Brentford’s Thomas Frank, known for his tactical acumen and success in guiding the Bees to Premier League stability, has built a reputation for maximizing limited resources and developing players.

The upcoming Europa League final is deemed crucial for Amorim’s future, and potential managerial changes depend heavily on its outcome.

Fans have expressed mixed reactions, with some calling for Amorim’s departure regardless of the Europa League outcome, while others remain hopeful for a turnaround. The club’s leadership is expected to make a definitive decision following the final, as they aim to restore Manchester United’s status among Europe’s elite.
