Vatican City, May 8, 2025 — In a historic and unprecedented moment for the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States has been elected as the 267th pope, adopting the name Pope Leo XIV. This marks the first time in the Church’s 2,000-year history that an American has ascended to the papacy.

The announcement came after the fourth ballot of the conclave, held on its second day. At 6:08 PM local time, white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling the election of the new pontiff. Shortly thereafter, Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti proclaimed “Habemus Papam!” from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, introducing Pope Leo XIV to the world. 

Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Francis Prevost has had a distinguished ecclesiastical career. He joined the Order of Saint Augustine and was ordained a priest in 1982. His missionary work took him to Peru, where he served in various capacities, including as bishop of Chiclayo. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a role that significantly raised his profile within the Vatican hierarchy. 

Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 following a stroke. The late pontiff was mourned by approximately 250,000 people during his funeral at St. Peter’s Basilica. 

The election of an American pope is seen as a significant shift, reflecting the global nature of the Church and its evolving dynamics. Pope Leo XIV is known for his diplomatic approach and moderate stance on various issues, which many believe will help bridge ideological divides within the Church. 

In his first address, Pope Leo XIV expressed humility and a commitment to unity, stating, “In the one Christ, we are one.” His papal motto, “In illo uno unum,” underscores his vision for a cohesive and inclusive Church. 

As Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, he faces numerous challenges, including addressing internal divisions, promoting inclusivity, and continuing efforts to combat corruption within the Church. His election is a momentous occasion, heralding a new chapter in the history of the Roman Catholic Church.
