Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim expressed his frustration following his team’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford, criticizing his players for frequently abandoning their assigned positions during the match.

Amorim, who has implemented a 3-4-3 system, emphasized the importance of players adhering to their designated roles on the pitch rather than improvising and switching flanks. The Portuguese coach acknowledged the difficulties of introducing a new formation, particularly during a challenging period of poor results.

“I knew implementing a new system would be difficult, but when you’re on a losing streak and haven’t won three consecutive games, it becomes even tougher,” Amorim explained. “That’s why I keep telling the players we’ll face struggles because I won’t change my approach. I’m giving them the tools to succeed, but they must stay disciplined in their positions.”

Despite United’s struggles to generate offensive opportunities against Brighton, Amorim refused to abandon his 3-4-3 setup. The team managed just one shot on target, a Bruno Fernandes penalty, and the manager admitted that his players are still adapting to the demands of the new system.

“If my goal was to impress the fans or the media, I’d switch to a two-striker system,” Amorim said. “But I didn’t because it would make it harder for the players to grasp our playing style. My job is to support the team, but we also need to confront the fact that we’re breaking unwanted records, and that has to change.”

The loss to Brighton marked United’s tenth defeat in 22 Premier League matches, highlighting the team’s ongoing struggles. Amorim stressed the need for greater focus and discipline, citing one of Brighton’s goals as an example of his players failing to execute despite being aware of the opposition’s tactics.

“We need to be completely focused during matches, but sometimes it feels like the team is distracted by other things,” Amorim noted. “Brighton’s goal came from a simple play, one we had prepared for before the game. The only way forward is to work harder, start winning, and create the time we need to fully implement our ideas.”

Amorim’s comments underline the challenges facing Manchester United as they seek to turn their season around, with discipline and commitment to his tactical vision at the forefront of his demands.
