BREAKING NEWS: Liverpool want to bring €85m Inter Milan flop at Anfield.

Liverpool are reportedly maintaining a close watch on a player who has long been admired at Anfield, even before Arne Slot succeeded Jürgen Klopp as manager. Despite possessing one of the most formidable attacking lineups in the Premier League and perhaps the world, the Reds continue to be linked with several high-profile strikers.

Liverpool Monitoring Marcus Thuram

Recent reports suggest that Liverpool are interested in Inter Milan forward Marcus Thuram. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the 27-year-old French international is on the radar of multiple clubs, including Liverpool. Klopp was reportedly a fan of Thuram during his tenure, and the admiration for the striker remains strong among the Anfield hierarchy.

Thuram, currently under contract at Inter with a release clause of €85 million (£71 million), has no immediate plans to leave the Serie A side. Interestingly, he shares a personal connection with Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa, as both are childhood friends. Chiesa’s father, Enrico, was once a teammate of Thuram’s father, Lilian, at Parma. Additionally, Liverpool had been linked with Thuram’s brother, Khephren, during the summer of 2023, although the younger Thuram eventually moved to Juventus from Nice.

Assessing Liverpool’s Interest

While Thuram has been productive for Inter this season, scoring eight goals in 15 appearances (according to Transfermarkt), his numbers don’t quite match the prolific output of other recent Liverpool targets. For example, Omar Marmoush has netted 14 goals in 16 games, and Viktor Gyökeres has scored an astonishing 23 goals in 18 matches. Nevertheless, Thuram’s performances have still been noteworthy, and his profile as an out-and-out centre-forward is appealing.

Liverpool’s current striker options, however, complicate the necessity of pursuing Thuram. Darwin Núñez, despite only scoring three goals this season, has shown he can effectively lead the line, while Diogo Jota remains a key attacking option despite his recent injury struggles. Luis Díaz has also demonstrated his versatility by excelling in the central striker role when deployed there by Slot.

Is Thuram a “Must-Have” for Liverpool?

At present, Thuram would likely fall into the “nice to have” category rather than being an essential signing for Liverpool. The club already has several capable forwards who can perform at the highest level, and signing another high-profile striker might not be a priority unless injuries or other unforeseen circumstances force a rethink.

For now, Liverpool’s interest in Thuram appears to be more of a long-term consideration rather than an imminent transfer push. He remains on the club’s radar should they need to bolster their attacking options in the future, but there’s little urgency to pursue a deal at this stage.

While Thuram’s talents and experience make him an attractive option, Liverpool seem well-equipped in the forward department, and any potential move would depend on changes in the squad or a shift in priorities at Anfield.
