Scott McTominay Reflects on Manchester United Exit and Flourishing Career at Napoli

Scott McTominay has shared his thoughts on leaving Manchester United, just three months after embarking on a fresh chapter in his football career with Napoli. The Scotland international, who had been a part of United’s setup since the age of five, departed Old Trafford last summer in a £25.7 million move to the Serie A side.

Despite quickly finding his feet in Italy, McTominay’s transfer wasn’t without its challenges. Former United manager Erik ten Hag expressed his reluctance over the midfielder’s exit, revealing that financial pressures stemming from the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) left him with little choice.

In a candid interview with The Times, McTominay opened up about his departure from the club he called home for 22 years, stating that while the decision was significant, it’s one he doesn’t regret.

“No Looking Back”

Reflecting on his departure, McTominay described the moment as a pivotal point in his career:

“Obviously, it’s a big decision; there’s no denying that,” he admitted. “It was a huge decision for me, my family, and my friends. At moments like that, you just have to ask yourself, ‘Do I want to do it? Absolutely,’ and go for it. There’s no looking back.

“I’ve never had regrets in my life or career, and I continue with that mindset. I want my career to be successful, and I’ll go out of my way to push myself to be the best footballer and person I can possibly be.”

Thriving in Serie A

McTominay has made an impressive start to life at Napoli, featuring in ten matches and already contributing three goals. His transition has been seamless, with the midfielder crediting his focus and ability to avoid distractions as key to his early success.

“I don’t read newspapers or social media. That’s something I stay well away from,” he said. “The past is the past. I’m enjoying my football and focused on pushing my team higher up the table and giving my best for my manager in Italy.”

Grateful for His Support Network

The move to a new country can be daunting, but McTominay has found stability thanks to the people around him. He highlighted the role of his support network in helping him adjust to life in Italy.

“I’ve got great people in my life who help me so much. The stress in my life is minimal because of my amazing family, friends, and my lovely girlfriend,” he shared. “It’s not easy going abroad and settling in, but the Italian people have been incredible. They’ve helped me with everything—finding a house, arranging transport, or anything I’ve needed. I’m very grateful for their support.”

A Promising Future

McTominay’s positive outlook and determination to succeed have set the tone for his time in Napoli’s midfield. While leaving Manchester United marked the end of a significant chapter in his life, the move has opened the door to new opportunities and challenges.

His performances have already drawn praise, and it’s clear that McTominay is relishing the chance to grow in a new environment. For both player and club, this fresh start appears to be the beginning of an exciting and prosperous journey.
