It Could Have Been a Lot Worse” – Virgil van Dijk Reflects on Liverpool’s 2-2 Draw Against Manchester United.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk shared his thoughts following the Reds’ 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Anfield. Despite taking a late lead, Liverpool failed to secure victory and nearly lost the game in the final moments.

United’s Harry Maguire squandered a golden chance to score a last-minute winner, firing Joshua Zirkee’s pass over the bar. Reflecting on the match, Van Dijk acknowledged that Liverpool could have come away with a worse result.

“It could have been a lot worse, to be honest,” Van Dijk told BBC Radio 5 Live. “They had a huge chance at the end, and we were fortunate not to lose. I’m disappointed we dropped points at home, but we need to move on.”

Liverpool mounted a strong second-half comeback, with Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah scoring to overturn Lisandro Martinez’s early opener. However, Amad Diallo’s equalizer, assisted by Alejandro Garnacho, brought United back into the game. Van Dijk admitted Liverpool struggled to maintain control after taking the lead.

“We found the 2-1, and from there, it’s about managing the game. But we lost possession too often and left ourselves too open at the back,” Van Dijk said. “We’re not perfect—we’re still learning, and this is another lesson for us.”

Despite United’s struggles this season, many expected Liverpool to win comfortably. Van Dijk dismissed the idea that the team underestimated their opponents.

“That’s just media talk,” he said. “We prepared for a tough game, and that’s exactly what we got.”

He also emphasized that Liverpool’s focus remains on their performance, not their position at the top of the league table.

“We take it game by game; we don’t look at the standings,” he added.

The draw sees Liverpool drop two crucial points but remain at the top of the Premier League. Van Dijk’s comments underline the team’s awareness of their shortcomings and their determination to learn and improve as the season progresses.
