Premier League explain Lisandro Martinez decision after Man Utd star’s ‘shocking’ tackle

Lisandro Martinez risked a sending off in Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, having jumped in with two feet while challenging Daichi Kamada for the ball

In the 63rd minute of Saturday’s keenly-contested 0-0 draw between Manchester United and Crystal Palace, Martinez jumped in the air and planted both feet just centimetres away from where Kamada was controlling the ball. Although the United centre-back won the ball and didn’t touch Palace’s midfielder, the home side were incensed by the decision to only show Martinez a yellow card.

Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson even sprinted out to protest against Coote’s decision, receiving a booking of his own for doing so. Around 15 minutes after the incident, the Premier League’s Match Centre account posted an explanation of the decision-making process on social media platform X, confirming that VAR had checked for a red card.

“The referee issued a yellow card to Martinez for a challenge on Kamada,” their post read. “VAR checked for a potential red card and confirmed the referee’s call of no red card, deeming this was a reckless challenge and made no contact with Kamada.”
