Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has launched a scathing attack on VAR and referee Peter Bankes following a contentious red card issued to striker Evanilson during their 1-1 draw with Manchester United. The incident occurred in the 70th minute when Evanilson was initially shown a yellow card for a challenge on United’s Noussair Mazraoui. However, after a VAR review, the card was upgraded to red for what was deemed “serious foul play,” despite replays indicating that Evanilson had slipped before making contact.

Iraola expressed his frustration post-match, stating, “It’s common sense… he slipped! Everyone could see it. The referee had a clear view, yet VAR intervened and made it worse.” He further accused the officials of favoring Manchester United, suggesting that the decision lacked consistency and fairness.

The red card significantly impacted the match’s dynamics, with Bournemouth leading 1-0 at the time. Reduced to ten men, they struggled to maintain their advantage, eventually conceding a stoppage-time equalizer to Rasmus Højlund.

Iraola confirmed that the club intends to appeal the red card, emphasizing the need for accountability and consistency in officiating. He highlighted a previous incident where Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes had a similar challenge overturned, questioning the disparity in decisions.

This controversy adds to a series of officiating disputes involving Bournemouth this season, with Iraola previously criticizing VAR decisions in matches against Arsenal and Wolves.

The draw leaves Bournemouth in 10th place, complicating their aspirations for European qualification. Meanwhile, Manchester United remains in 14th, still facing challenges in their Premier League campaign.
